God's Favor

Favored Student: Morgan Lyle

Morgan Lyle shares her journey of trusting God even in discouragement.

School: Spelman College

From the very beginning, I knew Spelman was where I was destined to be. During my senior year of high school, I decided to apply to Spelman early as I was eager to see if I could get in the first round. December came around, and I received the worst news possible; Spelman deferred me. Tears immediately ran down my face as I couldn’t believe my eyes. I thought it was over for me. I had been rejected from my first choice. I completely lost faith and let the idea of attending Spelman go. My friends and other classmates were getting in, which also deterred me from wanting to go there.

I shared my disappointment with my mom. She told me, “If you want to go to Spelman, you need to shake that despair off and keep faith in God. If you believe and know you’re supposed to be at Spelman, you will be there! Do what you need to do for the second round application and get to work!”

From that moment on I did everything in my power to make sure my application was top notch. I prayed every night as I knew nothing would be possible without God. When March came around, it was then a moment of truth. I received an email with a new update about my admissions status. “Dear Morgan Lyle, Congratulations …” I IMMEDIATELY called my mom, full of joy, as I knew God had made this happen!

The book of James says faith without actions is dead. I held onto this as I began my college journey. When I transitioned into my second year, I did not know how I was going to pay for it. I kept my faith in God and put in the work. I began reaching out to my scholarship coordinator and was blessed with $16,000 towards my tuition. I am now going into the second semester of my sophomore year fully paid for, and I owe it all to my Heavenly Father. I faced trials and tribulations throughout my college journey. I was unable to take out a loan nor were my parents, but God made a way, and I am forever grateful. I hope this motivates any young student to trust God and follow His leading in your life. I am grateful for my experience at Spelman. It has been one of the BEST experiences I’ve ever had and it has prepared me for my future in ways I could have never imagined.
